Eating tomatoes can help prevent heart disease

The heart benefits of following a Mediterranean diet are more than documented. Now, a new study has concluded that tomatoes may help prevent and fight heart disease .


The work, which has been developed by scientists at the University of Cambridge (UK) and published in the journal PLOS One , came from an experiment with 72 volunteer s: 36 of them healthy and the other 36 with coronary disease type. Both groups had to take a placebo or a pill with a supplement called “Ateronon” containing 7 mg of lycopene , a chemical that occurs naturally and is responsible for the red color of fruits and vegetables, as in this case , tomato.

The researchers discovered that this powerful antioxidant in the form of a ‘pill tomato “taken daily, caused a significant improvement in forearm blood flow in those taking the pill tomato versus those who received placebo, which obviously did not occur any changes in your health.
